Introducing: Made In Brazil

Behind every product, there is a powerful story.

Here at Bellina Caetano, we take great pride in our roots. Brazilian nature has inspired our designs and Brazilian craftsmanship is at the core of our products. While you might be familiar with our jewelry, our store is an ever-expanding selection of everything Brazil that is curated with our great American customers in mind.

We are happy to announce that the Bellina Caetano family is growing. At the shop and online, you can now find a selection of handmade purses using five different techniques straight from the tropics. And behind each style is a great artisan who put their heart and soul into making these products.

They have powerful stories - and we love sharing them. This week, take a look behind our rustic Brazilian Buriti Wood Straw purses, part of the new “Made in Brasil” series. We hope you love it!

Meet  Mercedes and Natalia, mother and daughter, Brazilian artisans from São Paulo and true Bellina ladies at heart. Sharing a passion for art and respect for nature, their core material is Buriti straw, a very delicate but malleable mesh using dry leaves from the Buriti Palm, a native Brazilian plant. The straw mats are then cut and sewed by the duo, to give form to the different designs.

The colorful patterns are made using Découpage, the technique of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf, and other decorative elements. The work is made with amazing precision, resulting in our beautiful straw clutches! And seeing the patterns come to life, with all their tropical exuberance, is Mercedes’ favorite part of the process.

Getting to the point of working with Buriti took some time for Mercedes. Sociology graduate and general manager for most of her life, she always had a passion for Brazilian nature and the amazing art that comes from it. What started as a hobby eventually became Mercedes' work and passion, a craft that she’s been honing for 10 years and counting. Mercedes' dream is to continue expressing Brazilian nature and diversity creatively in her art, bringing new shapes and patterns to the process - and to live in Spain for a few months, enjoying yet another warm and vibrant place! We are so excited to be part of this journey and help Mercedes achieve her dreams.
